GROUP APPARATUS CLASSES - WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT MAKES THEM SO SPECIAL

A group class in action at our studios

Group Apparatus classes are becoming hugely popular. There are so many different types of Pilates apparatus classes around at the moment, particularly with the boom in Reformer based group exercise classes. Not all “reformer classes” are the same. Here is an insight into how our Group Apparatus classes run at the studio, and what makes them such a great way to benefit from the Pilates studio system, rooted in Joseph Pilates’s original method of Contrology.

What is a Group Apparatus Class?

Our Group Apparatus Classes are an opportunity for clients to experience the benefits of working on the Pilates apparatus and according to the Pilates method, in a small group setting. Group classes are a more affordable options compared with 1:1 sessions, and a great camaraderie can develop within the classes which I just love! Our commitment to keeping class sizes small, and maintaining a personalised approach to our teaching mean you don’t have to sacrifice quality teaching and can work according to your own body even in a group class setting.

We work mostly on the Pilates Reformer; working within the framework of the Classical Method in our exercises and the order in which we perform them and progress. We also have Wunda Chairs, a Tower, Spine Correctors, a Ladder Barrel and a Pedi-Pul. We use these based on upon client’s needs to help you refine and develop your practice according to your body. During your induction your teacher is working with you to teach you the basics and get to know how your body moves and how the studio system can best help you. In your group classes, your teacher will plan classes and guide you throughout to help you work according to your experience and needs. You will have your own client notes that your teacher keeps updated as you progress.

We work within the classical framework as it provides a wonderful structure to allow continual progression as you refine exercises you have already learnt, and incorporate new exercises that are rooted in those strong foundations you have been developing.

We love our group apparatus classes. Your teacher will learn and work with each individual body and your own personal needs, as you work within a system designed to help you progress in an effective manner that works from the foundations up.

The Types of Class We Run

We run different types of Group Apparatus Class, to help you find the right class for you.

  • All Levels: Many of our classes are All Levels classes. This means the class is open to all levels from beginners (after an induction programme) to more experienced practitioners. Your teacher will review the class attendees and set the class accordingly based on the levels the attendees are working at, and any specific requirements or focus areas of those in attendance. You will be guided and supported throughout the session. Our All Levels classes are very popular as they give clients greater flexibility to choose between classes that fit their schedules.

  • Gentle Paced Class: Similar to our All Levels class but working at a gentler pace for those who may require a little more assistance with the apparatus or prefer working at a more controlled pace.

  • Intermediate: This class is aimed at those working within the intermediate level on the Pilates Reformer, according to the Classical method. Clients in this class will have mastered the fundamentals at the beginner level and will be working relatively confidently through the intermediate work. For each new exercise we introduce it properly, looking at the how it relates to exercises we have already learnt, how we can use other apparatus within the studio system to help us achieve the elements required for the exercise, and layering it up as needed until you master the full version.

  • Advanced: This class is aimed that those who work competently at an intermediate level and are ready to start learning the more advanced exercises on the Reformer and other studio apparatus. This class is by invitation only as it is a challenging class for which a good grasp of the foundation and intermediate exercises is essential.

What to Expect When Starting With Us

1) Induction Sessions

Before joining group apparatus classes with us it is essential that you complete an induction programme.

During your induction you will be introduced to the apparatus we have in the studio and shown how to use them, including changing springs and important health & safety considerations. Your teacher will take you through the foundation exercises on the Reformer, as well as key exercises on the Wunda Chair, Tower and sometimes other apparatus depending on your needs.

You will have your own programming folder that your teacher will update throughout your induction session, to record which exercises you have learnt, any modifications/variations that are particularly suitable for you, and where we may use other studio apparatus to help you master key elements of an exercise. Your teacher will continue to update these notes as you continue to progress in classes.

If you are new to the apparatus, or have very limited experience, you will complete a beginner induction. This can be done by joining a beginners 5 week group induction course or by completing a minimum of 4x private induction sessions.

If you have prior experience working on the Reformer and other apparatus you may be able to opt for a Refresher induction of a single 1:1 with us. This is mandatory even for experienced practitioners and other teachers, so that you can familiarise yourself with the apparatus and we can be assured you can work safely and according to your own level and body.

2) Stepping Into Your First Group Course

Once you have completed your induction you are able to book into and attend our group apparatus classes. Your first group class might feel a little daunting. Don’t worry. Your teacher will be there to guide you every step of the way , and we always keep a special eye out for newcomers in the class.

Within the class you are all guided through each exercise. Sometimes everyone will be doing the same exercise in the same way. Sometimes people may be doing different variations or “layers” of an exercise depending on their needs and experience. And sometimes people will be doing similar things on different apparatus. Your teacher will be continually checking in to help you with apparatus set up, guiding you through the exercise, giving technical tips and personal observation & adjustments. Our teachers work very hard in our group apparatus classes to maintain that personal approach that is so important to us.

3) Empowering Your Practice

The group studio setting encourages you to take ownership of your own work on the apparatus, as you begin to learn the exercises, the order and how to set your apparatus up. The discipline of the Classical method was very important to Joseph Pilates - to him it showed commitment to your body and your practice. You learn the foundations, and then apply these as you progress and continually challenge your body. You start to appreciate how each element builds on the next to help your body to move in progressively more challenging ways. You start to notice how your own body moves, and recognise some of its nuances. Developing a deeper understanding your own body. Whilst the group studio may seem a little daunting at first, stick with it. It can feel so empowering to work in this way and I just love seeing how quickly people grow in confidence and strength.

I am such a firm believer in the work that Joseph Pilates created, and the huge benefits it offers the body. The apparatus studio is my favourite place to be. It never gets boring, it is always a challenge. Consistent practice that leads to great results!
